Napa Earthquake August 2014

Updated model results – Fault inversion based on ARIA (Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis) rapid GPS solutions


Napa Earthquake Inversion ResultThe JPL ARIA team produced rapid displacement solutions for GPS stations near the 24 August 2014 M 6.0 West Napa earthquake. We used the GPS results to invert for a single fault, that represents the average fault slip and fault plane location. The results indicate that a 15 km long fault ruptured that was buried from a depth of 7.1 to 1.5 km. The average slip on the fault is 59.5 cm with a right-lateral sense of motion. The fault trends at an angle 22.5° west of north. We produced a model of what the inteferogram would look like for an eastward flying UAVSAR flight.
Interferograms represent modeled observations for existing repeat pass UAVSAR flights heading 55° and 235° respectively. The red line is for the modeled (inverted for) fault. The blue arrows are the observed GPS displacements and the red arrows are the modeled GPS displacements.

E-DECIDER Earthquake Forecast Service

Currently, E-DECIDER provides multiple earthquake forecast and seismic hazard proxy technologies. The first includes an advanced Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS, Ogata 1988) type model, in which future rates of seismicity are estimated from aftershock scaling relations. The second model invokes an inverse ETAS framework to detect rate trends (seismic acceleration or deceleration) in local seismicity; increasing local rates of seismicity indicate elevated local hazard; decreasing rates (aftershocks) indicate lower hazard.

InLET (Internet Loss Estimation Tool) Results


InLET (Internet-based Loss Estimation Tool) is a web-based loss estimation modeling platform used to perform rapid assessment of the impact of earthquake disaster in California.

InLET performs loss/impact simulations using USGS earthquake ground motion data and FEMA HAZUS damage estimation technology. The damage and loss values generated are only approximations of the impacts caused by an earthquake in the affected region. In the case of an actual earthquake event, the damage and losses could be different.

Results are appropriate for planning purposes and for early-post event response only, when more detailed data is not available.
